The Mount Pavilion, Fleetwood

The Mount Pavilion is a significant landmark in the town of Fleetwood, near Blackpool. It was an important part of Fleetwood’s maritime history as it allowed Fleetwood to operate as a 24 hour port in the 1800s. [1]

The flag staff was used to send signals to the sea, and the building was used as a lookout for the coastguards. It was also used as a weather recording station.

The current pavilion seen on the mount was built in 1902 and has a Grade II listing.

In 2015, Mrs Doreen Lofthouse donated £1m to restore the gardens around the pavilion [2]. A further £2.4 million was awarded from the national lottery heritage fund which allowed a further restoration to take place to the rose garden, the gate lodge and the playground [1].

The Clock Itself

The Pavilion houses a registered WW1 memorial. In 1919 the mount was presented with a turret clock to honour the men of Fleetwood who lost their lives in the First World War. The clock has two bells which chime on the quarters and the hour.

The clock is by William Potts & Sons of Leeds and is dated 1919. It is engraved:

It utilises a Double Three-Legged Gravity escapement and it’s pendulum period is roughly ‘1’. It is of Flat Bed design and has 3 trains (a ‘ting tang’ quarter strike and an hour strike) [5]
