The Poplar Project

All Saints Church, Poplar,  Newby Pl, London E14 0EY

In the tower of All Saints Poplar there’s an incredible clock by John Moore of Clerkenwell that was made in 1822.

The church, built in 1822 as well, was designed by Charles Hollis and built by Thomas Morris. It was constructed in the Greek revival style with a granite base and cost well over £33,000 (In which the budget was supposed to be £20,000)

There are 10 bells in the tower

I visited the clock tower of All Saints on the 19th February 2026. The clock mechanism was working, however was not in the best of condition. It had not been serviced since 2017 due to lack of funding and the chime and strike sides haven’t worked since probably the 1980s.

The clock mechanism itself is a massive clock, nearly as big as the one at Limehouse. It has a ting-tang quarter strike, and a general hour strike.

I offered to be the timekeeper at poplar (as its very close to Limehouse) which they gladly accepted! And considering this is one of my ‘children’, I think its only right to give a free service and to try my best to reinstate the chimes at poplar!

It would be fantastic to hear them again, as I bet many people haven’t in a long long time. And so, this page is dedicated to my progress on the project (and an announcement to when you can attend the opening day of the chimes 🙂 )

See below and wish me luck…
